Too often, people face their most critical financial challenges when they’re least able to think clearly and make informed decisions.
At Lathrop Helmers & Associates, we believe the true measure of a wealth advisory team is “being there” for clients with sensible, timely and caring financial advice and guidance – the kind that can spell the difference between a client feeling stuck and feeling optimistic.
Each of us – Philippe Lathrop and Julie Helmers – is not only a highly experienced and knowledgeable financial advisor. We see ourselves as “life advisors” with a proud track record of helping clients who encounter difficulties, and helping them prepare in advance, for likely (and unlikely) circumstances.
Over the years, we’ve honed a “hands-on, hands-held” approach in which frequent contact with clients (both spouses, whenever possible) has resulted in friendly and familial relationships. In addition, our ability to focus attentively on a client when their life is in motion has led to a growing, referred clientele – women and men recently widowed, divorced, changing jobs, and retired, along with members of their extended families.
Our clients are individuals whom we admire. Their successes are noteworthy professionally and for striving to assist people and causes around them. We invite you to join them – to discover how our distinct level of service can help you enhance a lifestyle, create a legacy, or simply move forward when small, unhurried steps can mean the world.
At Lathrop Helmers & Associates, clients come to us for many reasons – at different stages of their lives. Some reach a point where they desire an extra measure of financial acumen and sophistication. Others face multiple financial decisions at emotional times, when they’re feeling overwhelmed.
For all clients, we help create “space and comfort” – so that they’re open to information and insights. To gain a genuine appreciation of a client’s situation, mindset and objectives – and those of their families – we ask questions. And we encourage clients to ask their own. These are questions we often hear:
• “When can I realistically retire and enjoy my current lifestyle – and what should I do beforehand?”
• “My kids deserve to share in my success. How can I help them, without making things too easy?”
• “Now that I’m divorced, can I still afford to travel and support my favorite charity?”
• “My practice is lucrative, but I’m not extravagant. How can I begin to enjoy my achievements now?”
• “How can I be tax-efficient in the short-term and still grow my assets long-term?”
• “How well are my family and our investments hedged from market volatility or loss of my income?”
With no two clients alike, it’s imperative that we spend time with each client. On a given day, we may help women re-establish credit, assist couples in their second marriages with investment aspects of pre-nuptial agreements, explain Social Security and Medicare benefits, and examine the need for wills, powers of attorneys, and other documents.
Over the years, we’ve even recommended trustworthy physicians and babysitters. We’re ready to help – clients deserve nothing less.
At Lathrop Helmers & Associates, we work diligently to cultivate relationships with clients and the people they love. By understanding a family’s dynamics, personal issues, and shared objectives, we can provide highly effective wealth management that satisfies desired lifestyles and legacies.
To serve the best interests of clients and their families, we:
• Try to speak with as many family members as possible (given the opportunity) – to appreciate the goals and concerns of all stakeholders.
• Place a premium on educating spouses, grown children and elderly parents. We believe that clients should know what they own and why. They should also understand the strategy we’ve designed for them and their role in maintaining financial discipline.
• Work with a limited number of clients – allowing us to dig deeper, speak frequently, and do more for individual family members.
• Remind clients that we care about them and robots simply cannot. We pride ourselves on being sensitive and patient – and helping clients make sensible, unhurried steps in moving forward.
As our client, we expect you’ll discover our relentless consideration of the people and passions in your life. By rolling up our sleeves, opening our hearts, and communicating frequently with you, we can help you pass along wealth and wisdom – to future generations.
At Lathrop Helmers & Associates, we’ve always operated under the premise that superior wealth management extends far beyond wise investing. For each client to truly achieve his or her financial goals (professionally and personally), we scrutinize distinct aspects of their financial picture. By optimizing key areas, we can help solidify a client’s wealth and brighten their outlook.
As proactive financial advisors, we look for ways to mitigate tax consequences in the short- and long term, efficiently transfer wealth to the next generation (with gifting and other estate planning strategies), improve liability management, and offer life transition planning – as part of each client’s overall strategy. We also believe it’s incumbent on us to introduce new opportunities that can benefit clients and alternative scenarios that can help minimize risk.
With many clients in the midst of life-changing events or simply having busy schedules, we can help manage and streamline the efforts of their trusted advisors. To align strategies, we may coordinate with clients’ CPAs and attorneys. And to make sure “everyone is on the same page,” we often host meetings in our office – in some cases “prepping” an attorney to save clients the time and cost of doing so. We also provide clients with access to Bank of America, N.A. for residential and securities-based lending.
When it comes to investing, we combine our decades of rigorous investment training with the global research of Merrill Lynch. Our goal is to achieve what we call “inflation-plus” returns for clients, with minimal tax implications. We remind clients that diversification among asset classes and remaining disciplined in following an investment strategy are both hallmarks of achieving positive, long-term outcomes.
Supported by the global resources of Merrill Lynch, our team is comprised of talented and experienced individuals committed to building strong client relationships based on trust and personalized service.

*Peace of mind is an aspirational state of mind that clients hope to achieve.
