Ed measures his success – not only in clients’ assets – but in his ability to understand how clients view their wealth and the world. He brings a highly developed sense of care and integrity to an impressive circle of active and retired individuals in Arizona and more than ten other states.
Having managed clients’ portfolios and emotions during the volatility of 2000, 2008 and 2020, Ed is proud that virtually all of those clients remain with him today and have referred many others. He believes that’s due in large part to his enlightened perspective on mitigating investment risk and keeping clients from making emotional decisions.
Working closely with active and retired physicians, attorneys, engineers, corporate executives and educators, Ed finds it critical to fully appreciate the mindsets and motivations of each client. Before ever discussing dollars and cents, Ed seeks to understand what they’re trying to do now and what they envision down the road. Who are clients responsible for? What are their greatest achievements and most cherished goals? For most, a rewarding retirement lifestyle is their greatest priority.
Ed offers a boutique-service model designed to do more for fewer clients. This allows him to talk frequently with clients and serve as their reliable “first call” for any financial decision – from buying a home or car, to helping an adult child with a 401k left behind, or supporting a worthy cause. Ed explains, “It’s humbling when clients open up and ask for my opinion. If I can educate and inspire a client, I’m proud to do so.”
With no “cookie-cutter clients”, Ed emphasizes that each portfolio must reflect the specific goals, risk tolerance, investment timeline, liquidity needs, and personal preferences of each client. Ed uses Merrill model portfolios and customizes his own – diversified among asset classes, and most importantly, among industry sectors. Experience tells Ed that focusing on “sector rotation” amid shifting economic landscapes can help optimize results even in challenging times. He also offers alternative investments* – so that clients can benefit from non-correlated assets that may offer reduced volatility.
When helpful, Ed coordinates with Merrill Trust and serves as a client’s co-trustee to pay their bills, for example. He also coordinates with clients’ CPAs and attorneys to optimize gifting and other tax-minimization and estate planning strategies. In addition, he provides clients with access to Bank of America, N.A. for residential and securities-based lending.
A lifetime learner and highly credentialed financial advisor, Ed holds the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) certification from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards as well as the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor designation through the College for Financial Planning.
Ed followed in the Merrill Lynch Wealth Management footsteps of his father and mother. As a teen, he tagged along with both of them and witnessed the impact that a devoted advisor could make on clients’ lives. Upon graduating college, he spent nine years as a Supply Chain Director, joined his parent’s Merrill team in 2000 – left in 2004 for a supply chain role at a tech startup – and returned to the firm in 2007.
Not one to sit idle, Ed has competed in several marathons and ultra-marathons around the world (in the Mohave Desert, Ireland, New Zealand, Peru and counting). To “relax,” he enjoys hiking, camping, and spending time with his family at their home in Scottsdale. A graduate of Arizona State University, Ed is a devoted Sun Devils fan.
