The Barry & Milligan Group

Clients Are Our Focus

In 2000, Mike Barry and Kelly Milligan formed The Barry & Milligan Group, a dynamic team of financial professionals, with the goal of responding to the unique wealth management needs of clients through collaboration, commitment and caring. We work with a select group of busy individuals with complex financial circumstances, yet little time to devote to managing their financial affairs. Our typical clients include:

  • Corporate executives of publicly traded companies
  • Business owners and entrepreneurs
  • Professionals, such as doctors, attorneys, dentists and certified public accountants
We also assist our clients' companies with the installation and execution of corporate benefit plans.

Our Service Model
Our team has more than 100 years of combined experience offering customized advice and guidance. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in our relationships with clients. We believe strongly in a collaborative approach: every member of our team is driven to offer thoughtful, personalized advice and guidance to help enhance and simplify our clients’ lives. Our team members also work to obtain advanced professional credentials in order to keep us at the cutting edge of our profession. To help ensure different parts of your wealth management strategies work together as seamlessly as possible, with your permission we collaborate with your lawyers and accountants to help you pursue your financial goals.

Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. Rankings are based on the opinions of SHOOK Research, LLC and not representative nor indicative of any one client’s experience, future performance, or investment outcome. Addressing Corporate Executives’ Needs

We understand that as a successful corporate executive you are often time-constrained, and you need to balance multiple professional and personal goals.  We can be of service in helping you prioritize your goals and take the necessary steps to help you actively pursue them.

While unique, your needs as a corporate executive could include any of the following:

  • Reducing the risk of a concentrated stock position that ties you to your company’s performance

  • Navigating and complying with SEC rules, your company’s trading restrictions and equity reporting requirements

  • Developing a long-term financial strategy while addressing day-to-day portfolio management as your career advances and your goals change

  • Gaining easier access to cash so you can live the lifestyle you want, even though your cash flow may be uneven throughout the year

  • Working with you in a time-sensitive manner, knowing that you are extremely busy and your career is a priority
We are well-versed in helping corporate executives with the complexities associated with their compensation packages, including company stock options, restricted stock and nonqualified deferred compensation. When guiding you in developing diversification strategies for these holdings, including 10b5-1 sales plan design and execution, Rule 144 sales, cashless stock exercise and sale, restricted sale or charitable techniques, we also consider your other assets and risk tolerance.

Strengthening Your Business

We understand that closely held businesses can raise a myriad of emotional and financial issues. Our goal is to keep you focused on managing your business while we assist in organizing and growing your personal wealth.

The needs of every business owner are unique, and could include any of the following:

  • Building your business through alternatives besides using your personal assets to build and expand operations. We offer a wide range of credit and lending solutions that can unlock the borrowing power of your business
  • Analyzing and structuring your cash and financing and offering access to working capital through Bank of America N.A, that helps you meet day-today expenses while providing for employees' pay, benefits and costs

  • Establishing a retirement benefits plan to help secure your employees' and your own future

  • Safeguarding your business and your family’s future with business continuation, wealth transfer or succession strategies. We can help you and your employees manage the risks you face with insurance coverage, estate planning services, as well as personalized wealth management strategies

We provide access to Bank of America and Merrill Lynch's vast network of specialists and business professionals to tailor our advice and guidance to serve your specific needs. For example, if you are preparing a business for sale, we collaborate with Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Global Banking and Markets Group for guidance on mergers, acquisitions and initial public offerings.

Financial Care for Professionals

Physicians, attorneys, certified public accountants and other professionals lead extremely busy lives and are focused on the urgent needs of their clients and patients. We recognize the demands of managing your own day-to-day financial needs—as well as your long-term goals—may seem insignificant compared to your professional obligations.

Professional's needs are unique and could include any of the following:

  • Minimizing your income tax liability by developing strategies in collaboration with your tax professionals
  • Analyzing and structuring your cash and financing and offering access to working capital through Bank of America that helps you meet day-to-day expenses while providing for employees' pay, benefits and costs.
  • Transferring wealth and securing your family’s legacy, with the assistance of Bank of America specialists, through the establishment of family foundations, donor-advised and other charitable trusts
  • Establishing a retirement benefits plan to help secure your employees’ and your own future
  • Accessing lending services through our Wealth Management Lending Officer, who can offer an expansive array of home financing, and credit and lending services, including securities-based lending.  We also help you leverage Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s commercial bank to offer commercial property lending, lines of credit and cash management
Making appropriate financial decisions now could impact the financial well-being of you and your family for years to come.  Drawing upon our extensive experience and capabilities, our team of professionals work with you to help you benefit from your life's work.

Helping Meet the Needs of Executives and Plan Sponsors

Robust benefits packages are often a crucial part of business strategy - helping employers recruit and retain employees and assisting employees to pursue personal financial goals. Today’s rapidly changing regulations, reporting requirements and heightened fiduciary concerns demand more time from plan sponsors than ever before.

In addition to our wealth management capabilities, both Michael Barry and Kelly Milligan hold the Certified 401(k) Professional C(k)P® designation, and have extensive experience providing guidance on a broad array of corporate benefits, including defined contribution, defined benefit, nonqualified deferred compensation and executive trading programs.  Our process consists of:

  • Needs Assessment to evaluate your plan’s effectiveness, compared with others in the industry. For new plans, we evaluate your business requirements to determine the appropriate retirement plan program
  • Plan Design and Implementation including construction and review of investment menus and education for individual plan participants
  • Plan Investment Monitoring using a disciplined process through which we can make fund recommendations, based on performance
  • Employee Communication and Education including enrollment meetings and ongoing seminars to educate employees about using the plan, including choosing distribution elections

We also work with specialists from Merrill Lynch's Executive and Equity Plan Services group to help you design and administer benefit programs critical to your company's success.
