Inspired by a book he read in college, Bob changed paths from veterinary science to one that has brought him relationships and friendships with clients beyond what he ever expected. The book emphasized the value of wealth created outside of basic savings. This was especially relevant to Bob because his parents had only invested in cash-equivalent vehicles without growing their wealth. Bob chose a career in which he could help his parents and others create and grow sustainable wealth.

Today, the bedrock of Bob’s process is developing an intimate understanding of how clients view their wealth and the opportunities that come with it. For this reason, “dollars and cents” discussions are a final, yet important consideration. Emphasizing the need for clear and frequent communications, Bob encourages clients to ask questions and share any circumstance that could have financial implications.

“Whether they’re ranchers, farmers, physicians or business owners, my clients typically come to me following an advisory relationship where service was less than attentive and the dynamic was less than comfortable. In most cases, their finances need to be organized and work more efficiently. My job is to build a strategy that embraces clients’ visions and values,” Bob says.”
To gauge a client’s situation and ambitions, Bob’s planning-based approach is ongoing, not a one-time event. Asking questions, he looks to identify goals and holes in their financial picture, “What are you looking to do over the next ten or 20 years (pay for a wedding, buy a vacation home, send a child to college, retire)? Who are you responsible for? And how are you prepared for the unexpected?”

Bob insists on working with both spouses – recognizing that each has a stake in key decisions. He also visits clients in their homes if possible and engages in conversations around health issues, passions and pursuits that lead to financial strategies he custom-tailors on their behalf. With a strategy in place, Bob calculates the investment return needed for a client to reach their goals, with only the level of risk required to do so.

“I joined Merrill to have a much broader scope of solid investment choices with which I could more closely address each client’s needs, “Bob explains, “I have to say it’s like drinking from a fire hose here. I have the freedom to use investments based our firm’s award-winning research. Now I can build portfolios that are truly diversified and more tailored than before.”

Bob is especially mindful of tax consequences – often coordinating with clients’ CPAs and attorneys, to help align tax-minimization and estate planning strategies. He also offers access to Bank of America for residential and securities-based lending, and practice management solutions.

Bob moved to Colorado in 1993 and has fully embraced the Rocky Mountain lifestyle – hiking, mountain biking, playing guitar and rooting for the Avalanche and other local teams. He also remains a big fan of his alma mater, West Virginia University and its football team, as well as the Pittsburgh Steelers (his first love).

Before joining Merrill, Bob spent 29 years at several financial firms including Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo Advisors. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and Animal Science from West Virginia University and an MBA in Accounting and Finance from Regis University in Denver. Bob his wife, Julie, reside in Golden with their son who plays hockey and is enrolled in International Baccalaureate program in high school. He is a board member of the Rocky Mountain WVU Alumni Association and supports the Huntington Disease Association of America.
