John Durkota and The Durkota-Garfoli Wealth Management Group care deeply about enhancing the wealth and wellbeing of affluent individuals in the Atlanta area and nationwide. Many are ‘numbers people’ who carefully review my reports and the holdings in their portfolios,” John says. “I enjoy explaining – in detail if they like – the purpose of each investment and the role it can play in moving them toward desired outcomes.”
John’s perspective on enhancing and extending the quality of clients’ lives goes far beyond spreadsheets. Especially for those who risk neglecting their health and fitness to work long hours, John encourages them to “lift their heads, think ahead and consider” what’s truly meaningful. “I care about both sides of clients’ balance sheets and helping them achieve the balance they want in their lives. That’s why I may connect clients with nutritionists and trainers, as well as attorneys and CPAs. If you’re not healthy, wealth can prove meaningless.”
Based on a disciplined process in which team members help clients identify their goals for retirement, wealth transfer and philanthropy, John builds dynamic portfolios using Merrill Lynch models and stock screens. “I don’t try to beat the industry’s best analysts,” John points out. “Merrill Lynch gives me a view of the world and the insights to diversify across asset classes, borders and industries. I build portfolios that are data-driven and client-focused.”
By devoting the time to meet with both spouses whenever possible, John finds the experience can help them become more engaged in estate planning strategies and plans for saving and spending. “Clients who are dedicated to their careers often don’t have the time to figure out all the pieces on their own. It’s fulfilling to help them envision and prepare for critical decisions and transitions,” John adds.
John has long been dedicated to serving his community and a loyal circle of client families – many who’ve been with him for more than a decade. John is a 1985 graduate of the University of Illinois, John became a financial advisor in 1991.
A lifetime learner, John holds multiple designations that reflect his desire to serve clients throughout their lives. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certificant, a designation awarded by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. He holds a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst designation from The Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts, as well as the Chartered Financial Consultant® ChFC® and Chartered Life Underwriter® CLU® designations from the American College.
John is a specially qualified Senior Portfolio Advisor who, in addition to providing traditional advice and guidance, can draw from his experience to help clients pursue their objectives by building and managing custom investment strategies, selecting from a wide range of Merrill Lynch model portfolios and third-party investment strategies. When servicing clients through the Firm’s Investment Advisory Program, a Senior Portfolio Advisor may manage those strategies on a discretionary basis.
Over the years, John has participated in five overseas relief trips. He also serves on the advisory board of his local church. John and his wife, Pam (a photographer), are residents of Atlanta, have raised three grown sons and now have grandchildren. A genuine fitness enthusiast, John has completed sixteen half-marathons and one full marathon.
