After more than 26 years of gaining different perspectives on the world of investments, Cheri says, “The last thing I want is to talk over people’s heads. Clients know I understand money. What they appreciate is that I understand them – and customize a strategy that suits their needs only. There are no cookie-cutter strategies, because all clients are unique people – that’s how I see them.”

For retired executives and farmers, attorneys, architects, physicians, realtors, small business owners, women taking charge of their finances and many others – including second-generation clients who live out of state – Cheri provides “concierge-level” caring and guidance. Having retained a vast majority of clients for more than 20 years (having lost none during the market turmoil of 2008), Cheri finds that clients consider her “a stabilizing influence” regardless of how their careers, lives and locations change.

Cheri is realistic about aligning a step-by-step wealth management approach with each client’s actual risk tolerance, background, goals, expectations, and market conditions. Accordingly, she constructs conservative-leaning portfolios that aim to provide an income stream and moderate growth. Asking questions of clients, Cheri needs to know if they’re fee averse, or how active a role they want to play. Seeking to preserve people’s hard-earned assets, she explains that, in most cases, they can take less risk and still achieve their financial objectives.

With the discretion given to her by her Portfolio Manager designation, Cheri is able to make investment decisions and adjustments on clients’ behalf. For clients who grant her that ability – and for those who wish to be consulted – she assembles municipal and corporate bond portfolios, for example, blending a mix of equities, mutual funds and ETFs to allow for growth opportunities, Cheri builds “less speculative and more-likely” paths to the goals that clients agree upon with her. For clients who want to “roll up their sleeves” and influence investment decisions, she willingly accommodates them – as long as the overall investment strategy is not compromised.

While Cheri has extensive knowledge in fixed income products, she readily calls upon specialists in areas (outside of investments) that can brighten a client’s full financial pictures – managing debt wisely, estate and trust planning services, tax minimization, insurance and education planning. In scrutinizing client liabilities, for example, recommendations are often made for streamlined lending solutions that extend beyond mortgages, refinancing and home equity (NMLS# 509809) – to short- and intermediate-term financing through securities-based lending, at preferred interest rates. According to Cheri, “Bringing experts on board is critical to each client’s wellbeing. Arranging meetings and simplifying the process is important to their busy schedules.”

Having earned the confidence and in many cases, becoming good friends with clients, many turn to Cheri for advice in purchasing a second home, funding college expenses, even navigating the college application process. “I feel rewarded when clients rely on my resourcefulness. After years of problem-solving in financial areas, the relationships I enjoy have brought me new clients, but more importantly, stronger relationships with clients whose lives I work to enrich.”

Cheri joined Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in 1998, after working eight years as a securities trader for an investment advisory firm and two years in banking. In guiding individuals, couples, families, corporate and institutional clients, Cheri’s versatility and vast experience enables her to guide asset selection, performance evaluation and investments – as well as orchestrate specialists and clients’ own advisors in areas that include lending, financial and estate planning strategies.

Cheri is a loyal alumnus of Boise State University who earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance. She and her husband of “just under” 30 years, Bryan, have raised a grown son and daughter who’ve graduated college and have begun careers, out-of state. In her free time, Cheri enjoys yoga and playing golf (especially with clients), as well as knitting. She also volunteers as a teacher of Scottish country dance.
