About Us

Welcome

At Boyd Britton and Pope Wealth Management, we have a proud 20-year story that continues to be told. It revolves around the specialized needs of an impressive clientele – generations of successful individuals and families, as well as non-profit organizations and other institutions.

Our nationwide practice has grown from the introductions we’ve received to clients in 35 states. This, we believe, reflects our reputation for being a “comprehensive and caring resource” of customized retirement and investment planning, risk management and wealth planning strategies, legacy, charitable and estate planning services, and liability management.

Our success also reflects our track record and the loyalty of clients. Having managed their money and emotion amid the volatility of 2000, 2008 and 2020, we feel good knowing that virtually all of those clients remain with us today. We believe that’s due in large part to our enlightened perspective on mitigating investment risk and helping clients follow the strategy we’ve mutually agreed upon.

Who do we serve? Men, women, organizations, and corporate entities distinguished for their accomplishments and values. They include executives in the sports and entertainment industries, entrepreneurs and business owners, attorneys, physicians and other medical professionals (and their practices), their extended families, churches and other non-profit organizations, companies and pension plans.

We characterize our offering as a rich repository of knowledge and best practices. Each day, we formulate multi-pronged strategies as sophisticated as the challenges facing our clients. Privacy is a pillar of our offering. Still, the knowledge we’ve gained throughout our careers creates lessons from which clients can learn and prosper.

With more than 100 years of combined wealth management experience and a shared passion to serve clients’ best interests, we know that the value of an advisory team extends well beyond “dollars and cents.” It’s best measured over time, by the delivery of highly professional and purposed financial strategies – offered with an authentic, personal touch. We are fully invested in supporting our clients and welcome the opportunity to serve you, as well.

Planning-Based Approach

At Boyd Britton and Pope Wealth Management, we believe that effective wealth management is a process, not an event. Our mission is to be a steady and insightful resource, helping clients to accumulate, preserve, organize and structure their wealth in ways that bring meaning to their years of hard work.

Experience tells us to be “goals-based” advisors, which means we do not guide clients with our eyes on arbitrary industry benchmarks. Instead, we take time to look closely at clients and see them as people, not portfolios. To do our jobs well, we want to know what’s on a client’s mind and in their heart. What are they passionate about? Who are they responsible for? And why have they come to us?

From the outset of each relationship, we help clients explore and prioritize their most cherished goals for themselves and the people they love. By asking questions and listening more than talking, we help clients identify the purpose of their wealth, so that the strategy we formulate can help them feel confident in its pursuit. Rather than being a one-time event, this process continues over time, to address what clients envision in the near future and later, for their children.

In addition to clients’ goals, we look for holes in their financial pictures – areas that may have been ignored previously. Most often, they include liabilities, protective components such as insurance, as well as wills, trust documents, or just updating beneficiaries. There are no shortcuts to what we do. Typically, we have several conversations with clients before ever discussing investments. Why? Because we want to be sure that a client is as comfortable with us as we are in developing a plan that reflects their real-world goals and concerns.

From our offices In Baltimore, Washington D.C., Chicago and New York, we deliver proactive and professional guidance in person, by phone, email and WebEx. And as a “first call” for clients, we encourage their questions about any financial issue they have.

Inspired by our clients, we find that many seek financial freedom. Most are quite busy with careers and families. As dedicated stewards of clients’ wealth and wishes, we feel privileged to provide the vast resources of a global financial institution and a boutique-like wealth management experience.

Serving Individuals

At Boyd Britton and Pope Wealth Management, we serve clients at every stage of the wealth continuum. Like us, these individuals are “young and older.” As a multi-generational group of professionals, the ability of our team members to build enduring relationships with clients, their spouses, parents and children occurs naturally. With advisors spanning multiple generations, we can ensure a seamless continuity of strategy and service.

Our clients have distinct talents and visions. They include executives in the sports and entertainment industries, entrepreneurs, founders and owners of private companies, attorneys, physicians and other medical professionals (and their practices), members of the clergy, and generations of families. We also bring a special level of care and consideration to retired clients and those recently widowed and divorced.

While each client is unique in their situation and ambitions, most voice concern about having enough money for a rewarding retirement, capital for their business, or leaving a family or charitable legacy. Through candid conversations, we share our own stories and lessons learned – helping clients “see around corners” to prepare financially and emotionally for what they envision.

On any given day, we advise and guide clients across multiple areas of wealth management – risk and asset management, investment planning, retirement income planning, trust and estate planning services, wealth transfer and charitable planning, and liability management. In all discussions, we seek to simplify complex matters – distilling facts and figures into easily understood recommendations. By educating clients, they are better able to follow the strategy we’ve put in motion.

To drive our investment recommendations, we take cues from the belief and value systems of our clients, as well as their goals, tolerance for risk, investment timeline, and liquidity needs. Utilizing our firm’s outstanding research capabilities and informed by the Chief Investment Office, we diversify portfolios across asset classes – typically, with equities, bonds and alternative investments*.

Beyond risk-managed investing, we look to optimize both sides of clients’ balance sheets – assets and liabilities. In addition to residential lending, we offer access to securities-based and structured lending through Bank of America, N.A. We also work closely with clients’ CPAs and attorneys to align tax minimization and estate-planning strategies.

Ultimately, the referrals we receive tell us we’re proficient in assisting clients with straightforward financial needs and others whose complex financial lives demand sophisticated strategies. As a high caliber team, we are devoted to addressing the needs and nuances of accomplished people – allowing them to focus energy on their careers, families and communities. Results and relationships matter to us – and to the generations of clients we serve.

Serving Institutions

At Boyd Britton and Pope Wealth Management, we have extensive experience serving non-profit organizations (including foundations, endowments, churches and faith-based organizations) and small corporations (including their defined contribution and benefit plans).

Based on our strong competencies, we are familiar with many of the fiduciary challenges and pitfalls faced by investment committee trustees, including rotating board membership, limited investment options, and limited manager transparency.

Each of our team members is passionate about helping clients strengthen and grow their organizations, and helping institutions fulfill their goals and missions. We offer extensive experience in helping values based investors identify and examine areas of interest they might wish to address, including investments based on religious values, human rights, environmental quality and health care. Once specific areas are
discussed and agreed upon, we can build portfolios of investments that support those values.

For pension plans, we believe that liability-driven investing, compared to traditional investing, may be a valuable way to stabilize funding through market cycles. Additionally, we strive to help pension plans pursue greater stability in areas including required contributions and balance sheet impact. Oftentimes, we also provide cash management and assistance in building retirement plans.

As part of our plan design process, we provide access to services that assist in formulating investment policy statements, conduct vendor search, offer investment selection, and enroll and educate participants. We provide overall supervision and establish a disciplined review process to document results and keep plan sponsors in compliance with Department of Labor regulations.

To support our efforts, our firm’s resources are structured to help meet the specific needs of each organization or company in ways that make sense – strategically, operationally and financially.
