Throughout his 20-plus year career, Tom has earned a reputation for helping hard-working people monetize their years of hard work. Today, he continues to assist a diverse clientele in the Louisville area and Southern Indiana. They include business owners, corporate executives, “millionaires next door” who’ve sacrificed and saved, divorced and widowed women, and generations of extended families.
Many clients recently followed Tom to Merrill, for the same reasons he joined the firm. “I chose Merrill over other institutions because it clearly benefitted my clients. With a “rewarding retirement” the primary goal and concern of clients, Tom determines tax-efficient income strategies, examines Social Security scenarios, evaluates the need for long-term care and other forms of insurance. He also coordinates with clients’ CPAs and attorneys, and the firm’s trust specialists, to optimize tax-minimization and estate planning strategies. And given Tom’s background in banking, he pays special attention to clients’ spending habits and liabilities – helping clients minimize debt and access lending solutions, when helpful, through Bank of America, N.A.
Rather than follow a calendar, Tom takes a proactive approach based on the specific needs of each client.
“I’m not the advisor who says we’ll meet once or twice a year, or talk quarterly,” he says. “Clients deserve my ongoing attention and awareness of their situations – and ambitions. By speaking frequently and staying fluid in our discussions, I help clients make informed decisions, rather than emotional ones.”
When it comes to investing, Tom crafts strategies around clients’ goals, risk tolerance, investment timeline and liquidity needs. He also seeks to appreciate what both spouses want – often leading “difficult” conversations where each may disagree. Ultimately, his objective is to have both spouses find comfort in a goal-based strategy they understand and are able to follow.
Having rigorously trained and earned the Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) designation, Tom has a strong competency in serving business owners – helping them understand what he sees as two types of enterprises. The first creates income for its owner. The second also generates income, but goes further and creates ongoing value – meaning it can be monetized at some point, through a sale. Tom works hard to change the mindset of the first group, to help them stay cognizant of creating value as they move forward.
In 2000, Tom began his career as a mortgage loan officer and later was promoted to mortgage loan officer. Nine years later, he moved to Chase and was named a branch manager, where he was recognized as a national achieving manager in three separate branches. Eventually, Tom became a JPMorgan Chase private client advisor serving wealthy families. He joined Merrill in 2020.
Tom puts a premium on family time spent with his wife, Elaine, and their three daughters – the oldest married, and the younger two attending University of Louisville and Indiana University. Tom is also an avid cook and experiments (on his family) with new recipes. A devoted University of Louisville alumnus, football and basketball fan, Tom focuses on his own fitness, as well – working out and staying mentally sharp.
