Jonathan Stroebel

Profile

Jon Stroebel, CFA, CAIA, C(k)P®, CPFA, CFP® helps select families and individuals, business owners, corporate executives and government contractors pursue the retirement they desire. Putting clients’ interests first is the keystone of his comprehensive approach to wealth management, and he deeply appreciates the trust clients place in him.

Jon begins by searching for the unique financial circumstances and personalities of each individual. He analyzes each client’s balance sheet, and uses Merrill’s goals-based wealth management process to better understand each client’s individual investment temperament. With this knowledge, Jon can assess the financial resources necessary to help create investment models and strategies geared specifically for helping each client pursue their specific goals.

Leveraging the investment resources of Merrill and the banking strength of Bank of America, Jon can offer access to a global network of specialists and research, and create a framework designed to optimize short- and long-range goals, such as retirement income, education funding, wealth transfer and beyond.

The relationships that Jon seeks to build and maintain come not only from helping clients to create wealth management strategies but also from a deep commitment to service. Helping clients to understand their wealth possibilities — and what it means to them today and in the future — is greatly important to Jon. He proactively communicates with clients and can offer simple explanations for complex investments. When clients must address difficult choices, he serves as a source of information and guidance intended to help them decide with clarity and confidence. Jon joined Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in 2012 after serving seven years as a financial advisor with Morgan Stanley. Today, he brings a focus on retirement strategies to client relationships and provides wealth management across generations. In his role as a Retirement Benefits Consultant, Jon is one of the select advisors at Merrill who can advise companies and nonprofits on their employer sponsored retirement plans.  He also provides financial wellness for key employees and executives in their organization as well as advises on the investment menu design and selection of their corporate retirement plan.

Jon’s core belief is to place the interests of clients first. He feels he earns clients’ confidence in his services through a comprehensive investment approach, open communication, and timely, goals-driven response to every financial need. And because no two clients’ needs are the same, he customizes clients’ financial road maps from their distinct values and ambitions. While helping to oversee clients’ investment strategies, Jon also works to address their liabilities in order to help grow and preserve their wealth for generations to come.

Jon lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife, Meghan; their two children, Christian and Elizabeth; as well as their two dogs Brody and Odin. He is actively involved in his community through his parish, All Saints Episcopal Church as well as volunteers as soccer coach through the local MSI classic league. He is a member of the National Association of Plan Advisors and was recently credentialed as a Certified 401k(k) Professional, which represents the distinguished achievement for the professional Retirement Plan Advisor. The C(k)P® is administered by the Retirement Advisor University in collaboration with UCLA Anderson School of Management Executive Education. In 2019 Jon was named to Forbes "Best-in-State Next-Generation Wealth Advisors" list. Lastly, Jon is also a member of the CFA Society in Washington, DC and the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. Jon earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certificant, a designation awarded by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, is a CFA® charterholder, and in 2019 earned the right to use the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst designation.

Advisors considered for this ranking were born in 1980 or later with a minimum 4 years relevant experience; advisors have: built their own practices and lead their teams; joined teams and are viewed as future leadership; or a combination of both. Ranking algorithm is based on qualitative measures: telephone and in-person interviews, client retention, industry experience, credentials, review of compliance records, firm nominations; and quantitative criteria, such as: assets under management and revenue generated for their firms. Investment performance is not a criteria because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. Rankings are based on the opinions of SHOOK Research, LLC and not representative nor indicative of any one client’s experience, future performance, or investment outcome. Where do we begin? It starts with you.

At Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, your financial advisor focuses on the things you care about most- family, goals and priorities - even as they change over the years.

Understanding Your Life

Welcome

My mission is to understand you and what matters most to you. To take the time, to ask hard, smart questions and to listen carefully, then to understand, in great detail, exactly where your wealth stands today, and where you’d like it to be tomorrow. I help you design and implement a customized wealth management approach that helps you and your family pursue your personal financial goals while helping manage investment risk. My wealth management approach is about using wealth to help turn goals into reality.

Philosophy

Life is always changing and growing more complex. Your needs and priorities specific to your family, work, health and home are continuously evolving. And since your finances are so deeply connected with the rest of your life, an investment approach that is specific to your unique situations can be helpful. Even if you’re accustomed to managing your wealth on your own, you may find value in having a relationship with someone who understands your priorities and who has the knowledge and resources to help you make more informed decisions, no matter where in your life you are.

Approach

No two investment approaches are alike because no two investors are alike. I'll examine several components — your life priorities, investment personality and financial situation — and work together to help you create a customized, actionable approach with personalized advice and measurable goals. I'll help you track progress to your goals and work with you to adjust your investment approach over time, as needed.

Capabilities

We believe that to feel good about your finances, you need to know exactly where you are, where you want to go, and how much you may need to get there. I work with you to develop a customized financial approach, drawing on the best thinking of our firm, to help you with your financial future. I will make it clear what you’re paying for and what you’re getting. As your life needs and market conditions change, we will meet periodically to help make sure you’re on track in pursuing your goals and to adjust your approach as needed for the journey ahead.

Focus On Individuals and Families

I can offer advice and guidance designed to assist you in making investment-related decisions and trade-offs that can help you reach personally meaningful goals.  So whether you’re planning your retirement, saving to buy a home or fund a child’s education, I’ll start by getting to know you and how you feel about the following seven life priorities.:

  • Health: Managing healthcare expenses, now and in the future
  • Home: Upsizing, downsizing, remodeling or buying a vacation home
  • Family: Taking care of your family and other people in your life
  • Leisure: Spending your free time in meaningful ways
  • Giving: Volunteering, mentoring others and giving to charities
  • Work: Working in retirement, selling or starting a business
  • Finance: Bringing it all together and defining your financial goals

Your approach to investing

Drawing upon research in the field of behavioral finance, Merrill developed the Investment Personality Assessment to help us get to know you better as an investor and potentially help you refine your own investing preferences. By gaining a deeper understanding of how you think and feel about investing through this assessment, we can customize the financial approach we develop together to help you pursue what matters most to you. Our Investment Personality Assessment is one of the ways to help us get to know you - to understand your goals and priorities. These questions will give you a sense of the full assessment and help us provide you with additional insights and resources.
