Since the start of his career on Wall Street in 1984, Eliot Shatzman has been advising senior corporate executives, business owners, doctors and retirees on their investment, retirement income and estate planning needs. Eliot believes his strong work ethic, along with his dedication to clients, has earned him the ongoing respect of both clients and peers.

Eliot’s process is focused on one theme: Simplifying the financial life of clients.  Whether helping them accumulate wealth during their working years or establishing lifetime income plans at retirement, Eliot works with clients to help solve their needs through each stage of their financial lifecycle. His process is goals based, understanding the needs of clients and presenting powerful strategies.

Prior to relocating back to the Washington, D.C. area in 1992, Eliot was employed by Bankers Trust Company in New York City, where he was responsible for managing the Brokerage Services division, providing investment services to high-net-worth investors around the globe. His experience includes institutional investing and trading for Fortune 500 corporations, mutual funds, public pension funds and institutional investment advisors. While at Bankers Trust Company, Eliot enjoyed the rare opportunity and experience of working on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

Eliot is well qualified to advise clients, bringing to them the kind of in-depth industry knowledge that can only come from over 34 years of financial industry experience, through the good and the bad, and the ups and the downs of the economy. Based on his broad range of experience and the depth of services available to him from Merrill, Eliot has the skills and resources necessary to provide clients with the mix of services needed to help them achieve their financial goals.

Eliot's charitable ambitions keep him involved in the civic community. Eliot is an active member on the Board of Trustees for Capitol Technology University. He has previously served with the American Heart Association, Jewish Social Service Agency and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

A devoted father to his teenage twins, when not in the office, Eliot can usually be found in the country music scene following his passion for music, where he is an active member of the Country Music Association, helping artists follow their dreams.

My practice is focused on one theme: Simplifying the financial life of clients. I strive to accomplish this through my focused approach to understanding client needs and providing powerful strategies designed to help clients pursue their financial goals. Whether it is accumulating wealth during their working years or establishing lifetime income plans for retirement, I work with clients to help solve their needs at each stage of their financial life. An Interview with Eliot M. Shatzman

 

Question 1:  Eliot, you mention the theme to your practice is “Simplify your financial life – for the investor who values advice”.  Is there a story behind that?

Answer:  There certainly is.  I have found that clients I work with typically want a few simple things in life.  They want to educate their children, retire comfortably, and pass along their estate as efficiently as possible.  I help them do that.  Most clients don't want to constantly monitor the financial markets.  That's my job.  I simplify clients financial lives by taking a proactive and focused approach to understanding their needs and providing strategies.  Imagine driving your car focusing on the hood ornament and not down the road ahead of you.  If you’re focusing on the hood ornament, you'll very likely crash your car.  It's the same with investing to pursue your goals.  If you watch the stock market, your account value or CNBC every day, you can lose sight of the bigger picture: the road ahead.  What happens in the news today will probably not affect your retirement.  I keep clients focused on the road ahead of them. They understand the value of advice.


Question 2:
You've been very successful at helping people reach their goals.  To what would you attribute your success?

Answer:  I attribute my success a few things.  The first is my passion for my job.  I believe to be successful at anything you have to be passionate, enthusiastic and committed.  I also attribute my success to helping clients develop realistic expectations.  Having realistic expectations is essential for avoiding disappointment and discouragement.  Keeping clients focused on long-term goals rather than chasing high returns with high risk is a key factor. 


Question 3:
  Share with me who your typical clients are?

Answer:  My clients are successful senior corporate executives, doctors, business owners and other professionals who have achieved a level of expertise and status in their own profession.  They understand the benefit and value of advice.


Question 4:
  Do you focus more on personal issues or business issues for your clients?

Answer:  I focus equally on both.  Many times I am brought in by a client to handle the investment needs of their company or organization.  They then turn to me to advise them on their personal affairs.  Similarly, the opposite can happen where I am working with someone on a personal level, and I am asked to advise on their business needs.


Question 5:
What investment strategy or philosophy do you follow?

Answer:   That is a good question and one that must be considered by any client in deciding who the right advisor is for them.  My investment philosophy is simple.  I emphasize a very basic, conservative approach, owning high quality investments with proven track records of positive performance.  I do not speculate.


Question 6: 
What about discount brokers and no-load mutual funds?  Don't they provide the same things you provide at a fraction of the cost?

Answer:  I provide a very different service from them.  Discount brokers and no-load mutual fund companies are transaction oriented.  They simply buy and sell investments based on your instructions.
My product is advice. My practice is focused solely on helping clients achieve financial security.  My clients are focused on value, not simply price.


Question 7:
  It's obvious that you are dedicated to helping solve your client’s financial concerns.  How are you compensated for that?

Answer: There are two ways that I'm compensated for my advice.  In most cases, I charge a fee based on the amount of assets that a client has placed with me.   There are situations where commissions are the preferred method.  Both methods have their advantages and I will gladly discuss which method works best based on specific situations. 


Question 8:
  Finally, is there one word or phrase that sums up the way you do business versus the way other Financial Advisors are doing business?

Answer:  Yes there is.  Caring for my clients.  I don't believe there are many Financial Advisors who truly care for their clients like I do.  I succeed when my clients succeed.  I never lose sight of that fact.  I always try to place myself in my clients’ shoes so I can understand their perspective.  I treat each client as if they were my only client.  Earning the confidence of people who seek my investment advice is both my goal and my personal reward.
