With decades spent in wealth management and as a business owner, Brian possesses a rare perspective that has long served the best interests of an ambitious clientele – active and retired business owners, physicians, attorneys, and generations of their families. While diverse in their ages and backgrounds, most clients share a desire to serve their families and communities in Western Michigan and elsewhere.
A CFP® certificant, Brian uses his professional training and a rigorous, planning-based approach to fully appreciate what holds meaning in each client’s life. He also helps clients articulate the purpose of their wealth and what role they’d like him to play. Brian may ask, “What’s your greatest achievement? Who are you responsible for? Why have you come to me? And what’s one thing you want to do, that you don’t think you can?”
Brian explains, “I want to know what makes a client tick. Most are blue collar and started with little. To appreciate their situations and mindsets, I try to meet with their entire family. If they own a business, my background allows me to ‘talk the talk’ and discuss issues from cash flow and lending solutions, to succession, exit and retirement planning.”
Whether he visits clients in their homes, offices or factories, Brian focuses on delivering clear, straightforward and unbiased guidance – the kind that that leads to thoughtful, unhurried decisions.
When it comes to investments, he encourages clients to share his long-term perspective on growing and preserving wealth. Based on a client’s goals and comfort with risk, Brian takes direction from the firm’s Chief Investment Office and uses Merrill research to build diversified portfolios using low-cost ETFs, mutual funds and other asset classes, including alternative investment** strategies for qualified investors.
To align tax minimization and estate planning strategies, Brian asks clients for the names of their CPAs and attorneys. He also offers clients access to specialists at Bank of America for residential and securities-based lending.
A native of Newaygo and later, Grand Rapids, Brian put himself through college and built a successful company from the ground up, before selling it 15 years later. With that experience, he joined Fifth Third Private Bank and spent more than eight years as a wealth management advisor, addressing the myriad financial needs of business owners, entrepreneurs, professionals and other affluent clients.
Brian and his wife, Shauna, live in Rockford. Parents of two daughters – an adult and a toddler – their lives revolve around family and their church. An avid outdoorsman, Brian enjoys backpacking, camping and fly-fishing for steelhead on the Muskegon River and for browns on the Pere Marquette River. He is also learning to play acoustic guitar.
