From a small town in West Virginia, the “unpaved” road Aaron took to his current position was long, bumpy and extremely rare among financial advisors. As a boy, he watched his mother struggle to put food on the table, cleaning houses, living in public housing and depending on public assistance (before she went back to college and became a teacher).
As a teenager, Aaron picked crops, carried large stones from the woods and loaded them for shipment and sale to wealthy individuals in the D.C. area. Later, he worked in a truck/repair shop and as amateur boxer. While his friends were able to enjoy their childhoods, Aaron became passionate about achieving success though relentless determination.
After paying his way through West Virginia University, Aaron headed west in 1999 – his first airplane trip and first time crossing the Mississippi – as one of 100 UBS trainees nationwide. After two years, he was one of only a few to graduate the rigorous program (and the last one out of 90 to graduate in Las Vegas for a decade). Working six, 14-hour days a week (including most holidays), Aaron immersed himself in the markets, investor behavior, and especially the philosophies of the world’s iconic investors (Carl Icahn, Warren Buffet, Ray Dalio and others).
During the Dot Com upheaval of 2000, Aaron developed the investment philosophy he practices today. He reminds clients to “resist the herd mentality that can push you into investments regardless of their underlying merit.” Embracing his clients’ aspirations, realities and needs, he is committed to formulating customized strategies that can enhance their lives, beyond dollars and cents.
Aaron utilizes a disciplined, “goal- and outcome-oriented process” for his clients. In addition to traditional stocks, bonds and ETFs, Aaron offers clients access to alternative investments* including private equity, real estate, and hedge funds. This allows clients to benefit from non-correlated assets that he deems attractive, affordable and likely to offer reduced volatility.
Since being recruited to Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in 2012, Aaron’s fact-based approach has attracted clients who welcome his focus on financial freedom, managing portfolio risk, borrowing costs, and asset preservation. Many are active and retired business owners. Others are engineers, physicians, attorneys, executives, recent “tax refugees” from other states, and generations of their families.
Many clients are risk-averse – looking to preserve and grow wealth for themselves and the people and causes they love. When possible, Aaron conducts multi-generational meetings, so that children and grandchildren can appreciate the original work ethic, the responsibilities of inheriting wealth, and how optimizing their family and charitable legacy can make the world a better place.
With many business owners looking to sell or pass along their enterprises, Aaron has developed a strong competency in helping them plan and prepare for liquidity events. He also assists with 401k plans and other retirement plans. For all clients, Aaron provides access to Bank of America, N.A. for residential, securities-based and commercial lending. He also aligns tax-minimization and estate planning strategies with those of clients’ CPAs and attorneys.
A lifetime learner, Aaron holds the Certified Plan Fiduciary Advisor (CPFA) designation, awarded by the National Association of Plan Advisors (NAPA) and the Chartered Retirement Planning CounselorSM designation through the College for Financial Planning.
Aaron is a longtime resident of Henderson and Lake Tahoe, Nevada and passionate about living and working in both locations. Aaron’s greatest passion is his family – his wife, Camila, and their four year-old daughter, Isabela. Known for his high energy inside and outside the office, Aaron is an avid boater, hiker, and also enjoys jet skiing, biking, and camping. He is active with environmental conservation for Lake Tahoe and as well as Southern Nevada. He supports Keep Tahoe Blue, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Catholic Charities for Child Development, Singularity University, Las Vegas Angel Investors and the SENS Foundation.
I follow the deep-seated Merrill tradition of participating in the communities we serve. This drives my interest in spending time volunteering with organizations in our community.
