Well known in Garden City where he grew up and volunteers today, David Carpentier serves a growing number of clients in the area and across the country – active and retired physicians, entrepreneurs, executives with concentrated stock, widows, and others he calls “the millionaires next door.”
As David explains, “I treat clients like family and find that many clients do the same. Since I interned at Merrill Lynch in high school and began working for the firm after college, I’ve honed a disciplined process and a highly personal approach. Whether I visit clients in their homes, or we meet in my office, I keep a folder with notes about each conversation. Referring to it helps us review ground we’ve covered and where we need to go next.”
With most clients looking toward retirement or already retired, David’s focus often revolves around tailoring risk-managed investment strategies based on multiple analyses and conversations. David points out that generating reliable income is often not enough. “Growth of retirement-designated assets is critical, as are thoughtful strategies for taking Social Security benefits. Clients have sacrificed and saved. Given their longer life expectancies, a well-deserved retirement may last decades.”
When it comes to investments, David builds personalized portfolios using Merrill Lynch research and his own. In screening and selecting money managers, he looks for consistency, cost efficiencies, and full transparency. David believes that each investor should know what they own, and why.
For clients that look to purchase an investment property or require short-term financing, David provides access to Bank of America N.A. for securities-based and residential lending. He also coordinates with clients’ attorneys and CPAs – to help align investment, tax-minimization, and estate planning strategies.

In 1999, David joined Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor. A former intern, David has worked closely with many client families for more than 15 years.
David received a Masters in Financial Planning from Molloy College, where he finished “top of the class” and spoke at graduation. Currently, David serves on the school’s Business Advisory Council. For his work during Hurricane Sandy, David was awarded a Certificate of Commendation from Garden City. At the height of the storm, a tree fell on David’s home. After moving his wife and children to a safe location, David resumed patrolling with local police to protect others. David is a Lieutenant and former Captain of The Garden City Special Police (and a member since 1994) – an auxiliary that assists the Garden City Police Department. From 1989 through 1991, David taught hockey for the Montreal Canadiens Hockey School. Today, he teaches his children how to skate.
I follow the deep-seated Merrill Lynch tradition of participating in the communities we serve. This drives my interest in spending time volunteering with organizations in our community.
