The Mann Sullivan Group combines the intimacy of a boutique family office with the vast investment resources of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management and access to the banking capabilities of Bank of America. Working with a limited number of clients by design, we are able to develop close relationships with the families we serve and take the time to fully understand their specific set of circumstances. This approach enables us to not only address clients’ immediate needs and concerns, but also help them “see around corners” to plan for what might happen in the future.  

Our team focuses on helping families build, preserve, and transfer their wealth by taking a holistic approach to their financial lives, considering not only their investments, but also how they are positioned from a tax, insurance, and estate planning perspective. While we do not provide accounting or legal advice, we work closely with clients’ accountants, attorneys, and other professionals to help ensure that they are able to reach their financial goals over time.  

We believe that the key to a successful wealth management strategy is true customization rooted in a deep understanding of our clients. For us, designing and implementing a cohesive plan is only the first step in a process that will evolve over the years. As life changes around them, we stand ready to help clients navigate increasingly complex issues and make the appropriate decisions to enable them to succeed.

Our wealth management process begins with developing an appreciation of a client’s life, both financially and personally. Grounded in an understanding of their goals and who they are as an investor, we are able to analyze how a client’s wealth is currently positioned and evaluate the best way to move forward to help them accomplish their objectives. 

Working in concert with our clients’ accountants and attorneys, we examine not only asset allocation but also asset location in order to help ensure the most efficient management of clients’ wealth from both an investment and estate planning perspective. We also take into consideration their cash flow needs based on current and projected income and spending levels. This information becomes the foundation upon which we build a personalized wealth management strategy. 

The cornerstone of these financial strategies is diversified investment portfolios that we design to address each client’s specific circumstances and individualized needs. Strategic asset allocations are implemented through several vehicles: equity portfolios directly managed by Jon Mann (one a dividend-focused strategy and the other an opportunistic capital growth strategy), select equity and fixed income portfolios invested by third-party managers who we believe add unique value in their asset class, as well as exchange traded funds (ETFs) and mutual funds. We have also selectively employed closed end funds, market-linked investments, hedge funds, and private equity where appropriate. Bear in mind that some or all alternative investments may not be suitable for certain investors. Certain alternative investments carry significant risk and are not subject to the same regulatory oversight as mutual funds and other traditional investments.  For these reasons, access to alternative investments may be limited to investors who are designated as sophisticated, high-net-worth investors. In addition to this customized approach, we also manage actively-managed passive investment portfolios that provide broadly diversified exposure through tactically positioned index ETFs across a range of risk tolerances. 

The initial implementation is only the first step in our investment process. We monitor portfolios on a periodic basis and, in addition to regular rebalancing, will make tactical changes in response to or in anticipation of changes in the broader markets or in our clients’ lives. These changes are always approached holistically with a focus on tax minimization strategies.

The Mann Sullivan Group serves as stewards of our clients’ wealth through all stages of their financial lives. For those clients focusing on building their wealth, we assist with not only their investments but also with the variety of planning issues that must be addressed in order to help them prepare for their future including cash flow and retirement planning, insurance strategies, tax minimization, and education funding. 

When the focus begins to shift to estate planning and wealth transference considerations, either as retirement approaches or clients experience a significant one-time liquidity event, we proactively work to help ensure that they are ready to face these challenges as well. We understand the complexities, both practical and emotional, that accompany these major life changes and stand ready to help clients navigate these unchartered waters. Whether from retirement, sale of a business, inheritance, or divorce, our clients’ assets often represent wealth that simply cannot be recreated and will be relied upon to support them and their families for the balance of their lives. Our thoughtful approach gives them confidence that their portfolios are well-positioned to be able to meet this need.

Working with multi-generational families with significant assets, The Mann Sullivan Group focuses much of their practice on developing efficient wealth transfer strategies for their clients.

For those wishing to pass wealth to their children and grandchildren, we concentrate on appropriate asset structuring in order to minimize the impact of estate taxes. We encourage clients to discuss various Trust strategies with their attorneys and help them choose the most appropriate investments with which to fund these vehicles.  

Many of our clients have meaningful charitable intent and we help them develop strategies to accomplish this goal both during their lifetimes and upon death. Through the creation of donor advised funds and private family foundations we have ensured that clients’ philanthropic legacies are preserved.
